This weekend, the Israeli army began its Operation Protective Edge, a brutal military offensive to seize the coastal city of Gaza from Hamas.
The military says it has destroyed nearly 90,000 Hamas tunnels, but critics have long claimed the tunnels were used by Hamas to smuggle weapons and ammunition into Israel.
This weekend the Israeli military began itsOperation Protective Edge,, a brutal Military Operation.
As part of the offensive, Israel launched air raids on Gaza, with dozens of missiles hitting residential areas in the coastal enclave.
The Israeli military claimed it targeted several tunnels, including one at an army outpost in the northern town of Ashkelon.
The Israeli military has denied this.
In addition to launching air strikes, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has also launched ground operations.
The IDF said on Sunday that it had destroyed the “headquarters of the Hamas terror organization in the Gaza Strip.”
The IDF said in a statement that the military had struck “terror tunnels and command and control centers” in the Strip, killing dozens of Hamas operatives and destroying the group’s military headquarters.
The Israeli operation comes just weeks after Israel announced the arrest of Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, who is also accused of orchestrating several terror attacks on Israelis.
In January, Meshaeres lawyer, Nitzan Horowitz, said the Israeli operation in Gaza was “a response to the attacks that were carried out by Hamas in the occupied West Bank,” and that the “criminal organization is trying to create a new political environment for the terrorist organization.”
In March, Israel also launched an air strike on the Gaza border, killing an estimated 30 militants and wounding several others.
In July, Israel announced it had killed Hamas’s senior military commander in Gaza, and the military has said the group was responsible for a suicide bombing that killed Israeli soldiers in the town of Sderot.
