President Donald Trump’s second-highest diplomat has dismissed a threat from the rogue state to shoot down a United States drone and a U.S. aircraft carrier, saying North Korea will not be deterred.
In a tweet Monday, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the administration has not seen evidence North Korea is considering firing missiles at U.N. ships.
She said the North Korean threat is “unfounded” and has not changed the United States’ commitment to the international community.
A threat from North Korea would be a serious escalation in the country’s nuclear and missile programs and would not be taken seriously by our adversaries, she said.
Nauert also said the United Nations Security Council must act quickly to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.
She noted that the North is close to testing a hydrogen bomb and that “no country has the capacity to deter or destroy a ballistic missile.”
The tweet comes as the U.K. has said it is preparing to deploy a second aircraft carrier to the Korean Peninsula and a second ship to the Pacific Ocean.
