MSNBC is reporting that the FBI used a “troubling” method in its investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election.
The network reports that the agency used a highly classified method of identifying potential spies in the country.
While the agency does not explicitly refer to the technique, the network notes that the report comes from a former senior FBI official who worked on the probe.
FBI sources tell MSNBC that the method, which was reportedly developed during the investigation into Russian interference in the presidential election, was a “tool of last resort” and that the intelligence agency used it when they had to investigate potential sources.
In a statement to The Hill, the FBI said it was unable to comment on the report, but referred the Intercept to a statement that said it has “zero tolerance” for false information and “firmly denies that any of our investigations into any of the Russian activity involved the use of any classified information.”
